In this issue of Transport Topics, President Eisenhower’s Advisory Committee on a National Highway Program proposed increasing the nation’s highway expenditures by $101 billion over the next 10 years, expanding the National System of Interstate Highways to 400,000 miles.  

In the committee report it was noted, “highway transportation provides essential movement of people and goods; in addition, it has itself become a major element of the economy, generating directly or indirectly approximately one-seventh of all gainful employment and accounting for 14% of the total Gross National Product.”
