Truckers Say HOS Rule Leaves Little Time for Naps

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Trucking industry executives and drivers who testified at an hours-of-service “listening” session held by federal trucking regulators at the Mid-America Trucking Show here said the current rule does not give drivers the flexibility to take a nap when they become fatigued.

A need to build more flexibility into the HOS rule seemed to be the biggest point of contention expressed by truckers who attended the all-day listening session Friday that was moderated by Anne Ferro, administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Most drivers said they were pleased with the current rule’s 11 hours allotted drive time and its 34-hour restart provision.

The session was the fifth in a series of sessions intended to help FMCSA officials in their plan to issue a revised driver-hours rule by July.
