Ryder System has teamed with Geotab to launch the Ryder electronic logging device platform for commercial rental customers in North America.

The ELD offers some flexibility, allowing customers to use it or their own portable ELD equipment, Ryder said. It provides access to a fleet management portal for personnel-profile creation; tracks a vehicle’s location, routing activity and idle time; and creates geofences and alerts for fleet activity notifications.

Geotab provides telematics and compliance management tools for monitoring and recording hours of service.

Ryder rental customers are pre-registered in the company’s systems, though Ryder ELD users must download and log on to the Geotab Drive app on a cellular data-connected mobile device. The Ryder ELD is available for Android- or iOS-based smartphones and tablets.

The ELD mandate goes into effect Dec.18. However, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ruled last month that rental trucks in use for eight days or less are exempt from the ELD requirement. Drivers operating under the eight-day exemption still are subject to standard hours-of-service rules, must keep a paper record of duty status and have a copy of the truck’s rental agreement in the vehicle.

Jake Jacoby, president of the Truck Renting and Leasing Association, told Transport Topics last month that “the vast majority” of short-term rentals are for “more than eight days, and certainly more than 95% are for 30 days or less.”

TRALA members include Ryder, Penske Truck Leasing, U-Haul, and Budget and Enterprise Truck Rental.
