HAGER HILL, Ky. — Big Sandy Community and Technical College’s Workforce Solutions division has partnered with the Kentucky Trucking Association to enhance curriculum for those seeking commercial driving licenses.

Leo Fell Jr., instructor of the CDL program at Big Sandy, said the college and officials with the KTA have worked for more than a year to bring more opportunities to those seeking a CDL credential.

“Our goal was to elevate the quality of training and allow additional pathways for those seeking a license,”  Fell said.

Until last month, Big Sandy was the only school in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System to offer CDL instruction not operated by a third party. Hopkinsville Community and Technical College, through the assistance of Big Sandy, launched its new and revamped CDL program on June 27.

“Like all industries, the trucking industry has experienced a lot of change,” Fell added  “With our curriculum, drivers can explore multiple pathways, including an associate degree.”

Kelli Hall, dean of career education and workforce development at Big Sandy, said Fell has set the standard for others to follow.

“Leo has a passion for our students and making sure that the training they receive is comprehensive and prepares them for a rewarding career,”  Hall said. “We are proud of the work we are doing, and I am glad that our thorough approach to delivering our CDL program is being recognized.”
