International Wary About SCR Engines

img src="/sites/default/files/images/articles/printeditiontag_new.gif" width=120 align=right>International Truck and Engine Corp. will not use selective catalytic reduction technology on its own heavy-duty engines to meet federal 2007 emissions standards because SCR requires a fuel additive that International believes will not be widely available, a top company official said.

Other diesel engine manufacturers, including Volvo and Mack, are developing SCR engines, which require injecting urea into the fuel mixture to achieve lower emissions.

“The ability for us to have filling stations fill up the tanks for the SCR system, which will require urea or ammonia, is not a viable option in 2007. I doubt it is a viable option in 2010,” Patrick Charbonneau, vice president of International’s engine group, said last week.
