The need to fund infrastructure projects nationwide will be discussed at the National Press Club on Sept. 9 during a panel featuring Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, Teamsters President James Hoffa and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R).

The three officials are expected to call on Congress to advance a long-term highway bill this fall. Federal highway funding authority is set to expire in late October.

The Obama administration has proposed financing highway programs with revenue from a one-time 14% tax on earnings U.S. corporations have kept overseas. Several transportation groups, such as American Trucking Associations, support raising taxes on fuels to fund infrastructure projects.

The American Society of Civil Engineers concluded in 2013 that one in nine bridges in the country is in significant need of repair.

The Press Club event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
