Deal Extends Communications Firm's Reach in Canada

Omnitracs has acquired the assets of Shaw Tracking, its longtime distribution partner in Canada, company officials announced Sept. 19.

The purchase expands Omnitracs’ customer base and reach into Canada in advance of new government regulations that include a mandate for use of electronic logging devices, officials said in a statement.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Shaw Tracking was a subsidiary of Shaw Communications Inc. and represented Omnitracs in Canada for more than 25 years, providing vehicle tracking, fleet management software and other products to commercial fleet operators.

The company is based in Calgary, Alberta.

“The acquisition of Shaw Tracking is a milestone accomplishment for Omnitracs and represents a significant opportunity for the transportation industry to continue to transform itself through technology,” said John Graham, CEO of Dallas-based Omnitracs. “Our goal is to bring the best technology solution to transportation and logistics companies, and expanding our presence into the Canadian market furthers this initiative.”

Mike Ham, vice president and general manager of Omnitracs Canada, will continue to head up the operations.

Omnitracs helped launch the wireless communications revolution in trucking with a satellite-based system in the late 1980s. It provides vehicle telematics and tracking systems now for 12,000 customers and more than 1.1 million assets in 70 countries.
