Coca-Cola Consolidated, the largest independent Coca-Cola bottler in the United States, is deploying the DriveCam video safety program from Lytx Inc. after testing the system in part of its fleet.

The private carrier reported a 27% drop in the frequency of unsafe driving behaviors after implementing DriveCam at three locations, encompassing 200 drivers and 115 vehicles.

The onboard cameras revealed instances of unsafe behaviors such as late response, distracted driving and inadequate following distance.

“I found out that DriveCam gave us more opportunities for improvement than I would have imagined,” said Mark Byers, Coke Consolidated’s senior director of risk management.

The company now plans to implement DriveCam at 28 locations, he said.

The DriveCam system identifies which drivers represent the greatest safety risk, enabling Coke Consolidated to provide targeted driver coaching. The program also reveals exceptional driving so the company can offer prizes to reward top performers.

“Our objective is to return our drivers home safely each day,” Byers said. “The DriveCam system gives us the ability to recognize coaching opportunities and provide the appropriate level of training to ensure a driver’s further development and success.”

Coke Consolidated, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., operates a fleet of more than 3,300 delivery vehicles.
